Tsechen Damchos Ling Buddhist Monastery

New Building Project

A new chapter in the history of Tsechen Damchos Ling began in 1999 with the admission of eleven new novice monks. These boys, aged between ten and fifteen, come from the remote Mustang region on the Nepal - Tibet border. Their families are nomads who make their living by herding sheep and goats. Life is very hard in this region, and most of the people are illiterate due to the lack of local educational opportunities.

Tsechen Damchos Ling has admitted the boys in response to their families' wish that they receive an education and spiritual training. Lama Kunga Tenzin, a monk of Damchos Ling who was studying at the Sakya Centre, Rajpur, was recalled with permission from H.H. Sakya Trizin (head of the Sakya order) to teach the new monks. With the arrival of Lama Kunga Tenzin a monastic school was started at Damchos Ling with classes in religious studies, Tibetan and English language.

The monastery does not have any definite source of income, and is totally dependent on individual and organizational contributions. The little savings the monks have made have been used for the construction of the new kitchen and office building. Compared to many similar institutions, the monastery's expenditure is very modest.

The monks would greatly welcome any offers of sponsorship - this project can be an effective and wonderful means of giving the monastery a reliable source of support. People interested can sponsor one or a number of young monks. The monthly sponsorship payment is $20, which will take care of one monk's whole maintenance expenses.
