Obituary: Thupten Sangpo

Thupten Sangpo was born on 12th March 1988 at Lo Dakmar, Mustang, Nepal. He joined Tsechen Damchos Ling as a novice monk in October 1999. He was one of the most intelligent of the monks, and was humerous and gentle in character.
On 15th December 2002 Thupten Sangpo, along with many others in the Tibetan Settlement, was on his way to hear HH Dalai Lama give teachings at Drepung Monastery, about three kilometres from Tsechen Damchos Ling.
Because of the mass gathering of people attending the teachings, it was very difficult to travel by public transport. Many people were therefore travelling by whatever means they could, including travelling holding onto the rail of a jeep, and even by riding on top of the roof of a jeep.
Thupten Sangpo was riding perched on the roof of a jeep, and he lost his balance and fell off when the jeep rode over a speed breaker.
Although he was taken to hospital immediately, sadly he died at 11.15AM of a brain hemorrhage resulting from the head injuries caused by the fall.
The tragic loss of this active young monk has been a great blow to his friends and family, and a shock to all the Tibetans in Mundgod.
Special prayers are being carried out by his fellow monks during the 49 days of intermediate transition for his rebirth in higher realms.
